A paxtafel (Latin: osculatorium, tabula pacis, lapis pacis) is a decorated table with a handle, sometimes in gold, but also in wood, ivory or other material, usually (richly) decorated with scenes from the gospel.
Its use goes back to the late Middle Ages, a time when one was averse to mutual kissing in the wrong. The kiss of peace was then given on the PAX table, wiped and then passed on to the person who received the peace Coast in turn, passed on to concelebrating priests.
