Information
August Schädler (Bergatreute 1862-1925 Munich) was educated at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Art in Munich. He travelled to Italy and the Netherlands before settling as an independent artist in Sigmaringen in 1887. In 1905 he was appointed to the prestigious post of court sculptor at the Grand-Ducal court of Baden working for royal patrons all over Europe and completing ecclesiastical commissions. He preferred working in the style of the Italian Renaissance which reflected his religious feelings and mood.
This Madonna with child is a beautiful example of the delicate works he created and which so beautifully reflect his love for the Italian Renaissance and the classical heritage. As an important sculptor Schädler would concentrate his efforts on carving the Madonna and Child while his assistants would provide the very classical and detailed frame. Because of the size of the object it was certainly made for private devotion.
