Flamish cabinet, collectors cabinet

Antwerp, between 1660 and 1680.

Flemish art cabinet, with drawers and doors, inlaid with tortoiseshell, bone, Ebony and Rosewood veneer. The drawers with legs buttons and brass gilded fittings. These types of cabinets were used to store collections.
This art or collection cabinet is a typical Flemish product from the 2nd half of the 17th century. At that time there was a considerable production of this type of luxury furniture, especially in Antwerp but also in Bruges and Ghent. The Cabinet is executed in Baroque style. Typical of this style is, among other things, the creation of spatial illusions by means of mirrors as in the execution of the ‘aedicule’ – or ‘Little House or God's house’ inside the furniture, at that time also called ‘perspectiefke’ in Flanders. The clothing style of the depicted couple in the’ perspectiefke ' also indicates an origin at this time.
