Gilded silver chalice in neo-Gothic style

Johannes Hendrik Schmidt, Amsterdam, 1825-1900.

Chalice on multi-lobed base with enamelled quatrefoils with the evangelist symbols in the middle of vines. Very richly decorated with rose-cut diamonds. Johannes Hendrik Schmidt was employed from 1849 with his brother Jacobus Wilhelmus in the firm ‘Gebroeders Schmidt’. In the first years he was active only as a foreman (silversmith), in 1867 a cash farm (shop) was opened in addition. In 1893, Schmidt wrote a letter to the guarantor that the production of the studio had stopped in 1885. In 1864, Schmidt produced a pair of Wall arms, ordered by the city of Amsterdam as a 25-year wedding gift for King Willem III and Queen Sophie.

Approximately 8.6 carats of diamond total.

Partially restored enamel.
